Nkunzi

Nkunzi is a Xhosa term for a male animal. It is also often used to refer to a person, obviously male.


Ndifuna ukuthetha inkunzi yebhokhwe.

I want to buy a male goat.

Nyaope boy

This is a term used to refer to someone who smokes nyaope.


These nyaope boys would kill you for R5.

Cape Flats

The term Cape Flats refers to a flat, sandy stretch of land which is located on the outskirts of the city of Cape Town. It has been accurately described as the "dumping ground of apartheid" and it is here that people of colour (non-whites in "old South Africa" language) were relocated to in terms of the infamous Group Areas Act.


I am from the Cape Flats where we hear gunshots every night.


Gugulethu

Gugulethu is a township in Western Cape, South Africa and is around 20km from Cape Town. Its name is a contraction of igugu lethu, which is Xhosa for our pride / our hope.


When i visit Cape Town, I make sure I go to Gugulethu.

Ngiyakukhumbula, meaning I miss you

Refers to R100 (One hundred Rands. One Klipa would mean R100, 2 klipa - R200, etc.

Ingcibi is a Xhosa traditional surgeon who performs circumcisions on young males during initiation.


His grandfather is ingcibi of the village.


Influencer

An influencer is a person that usually has a lot of followers on Social Media and might get paid to post (promote) some things.


These influencers these days think they breathe flavoured air.

Pifta

Pifta is a new Xhosa slang word for Penis. It’s a different variation of the Xhosa word Pipi, which means penis.


Makrwalaz: New year, new Pifta.


Bherhi

Hero is a Xhosa term for a homeless person.


Did you see Thabo left home, ngu bherhi ngoku.

Sekisi

A very weird way of spelling Sex. These people do it on social media.


I thought they broke up a long time ago only to find out they still have sekisi everyday.
