My friend

This is a term that refers to the Somali or Pakistani shop owners in South Africa. This term started when these shop owners first arrived in South Africa and they referred to everyone as "My friend". The name was then subsequently given to them.


1. Child: Hi, my friend. How much are your sweets?
My friend: It's 2 bob for one sweet, my friend.

Pakistani shop owner: My friend I am not your friend, my friend.



Chief

General term used by people in politics (comrades) and Tenderpreneurs to refer to each other.


No one:
Comrade: Why are you being emotional, chief? Politics are not for the weak.



Mageza

Short for Magezel'empompeni, is a derogatory name used to refer to a taxi driver. The word directly translates to "the one who baths from a tap". The name originates from that stereotype that taxi drivers have a long distance relationship with water.


Abo mageza from Jozi are so rude and funny at the same time.



Ramabillion

This refers to President Cryil Ramaphosa. He was given this nickname after he announced R500 billion Covid-19 relief fund. He was throwing billions like he was throwing boxing punches.


Don't worry, President Ramabillion has promised us a R350 covid grant.



Phara

Also known as phara-phara. A term that refers to a drug addict who often terrorizes the community through criminal activities. The term is mostly used in Xhosa and Zulu speaking communities. In Gauteng, this person would be called a Nyaope Boy.


There was nothing he could do, ela phara had a huge knife so he just gave away the phone.



Lepyatla

This term is commonly used to refer to a very beautiful and attractive girl. This word originates from S'pitori, commonly known as Pretoria.


Tjo ngwana ona na ke lepyatla.



Mntase

Short for mntasekhaya. A Xhosa term of endearment for family i.e siblings, cousins or even a dear friend.


- Yho mntase, you should have seen the way he looked at me.

- Never let men play you, mntase. Banyise bonke.



Thabo

One of the most popular name in textbook examples. This is the guy who always buy a lot of unnecessary things in the textbook.

Maths textbook: Thabo bought 20 watermelons and 16 condoms, how many cousins does Thabo have?



Blesser

A rich, usually older guy who exchanges his money for sexual benefits from young girls and/or boys.


Chomie, I got this new iPhone from my Blesser.



Slay queen

Young and naive girls who apparently do not date broke men. They spend hours on Snapchat and Instagram showing off things they don't even own.


Sandton slay queens are the worst, they will milk you dry then run way.
